The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the main UN entities and is charged with providing overall guidance and coordination on economic and social matters. This entails facilitating discussions and being a forum for policy dialogue, formulating recommendations and initiating studies and reports. ECOSOC is also charged with coordinating international conferences and summits.

Especially relevant to the OCEANSTATES project is the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which is convened annually in the auspices of ECOSOC.
